Theology of the Body
Study of God as Revealed through Our Bodies
The theology of the body is a term used to identify Pope John Paul II's Wednesday audiences which taught a holistic reality of the human person - body, soul, and spirit. Pope John Paul II delivered these truths not as new knowledge, but as knowledge uncovered through the Church's Tradition and Scripture. It answers the fundamental questions -
Who are we? What are we made for? What is the difference between males and females? What is authentic love?
How is it that we are made in God's image? Can we possibly live purely in today's modern age as human beings?
“The fact that theology also considers the body should not
astonish or surprise anyone who is aware of the mystery
and reality of the Incarnation. Theology is that science
whose subject is divinity. Through the fact that the Word of
God became flesh, the body entered theology through the
main door. The Incarnation and the redemption that
springs from it became also the definitive source of the
sacramentality of marriage…” (TOB April 2, 1980) p. 88
